SESSION 1

Building Postvention Readiness
November 5th 2026 | 12pm-1:30pm

Preparing Clinicians, Supervisors, and Organizations Before Client Suicide Occurs

Client suicide is an experience that can have significant clinical, professional, and organizational impact. Yet many clinicians and organizations have little preparation for what happens after a client dies.

Postvention readiness begins before a loss occurs. This session explores how clinicians, supervisors, and organizations can prepare for the possibility of client suicide and develop a stronger foundation for responding when it happens.

Participants will explore:

  • What postvention readiness means in clinical practice

  • Why postvention begins before a client suicide occurs

  • What clinicians may experience following the suicide of a client

  • The individual, supervisory, and organizational dimensions of readiness

  • Common gaps that leave clinicians and organizations unprepared

  • The role of supervision and organizational culture in supporting clinicians after loss

  • Practical strategies for strengthening readiness and resilience

  • How preparation can reduce isolation, uncertainty, and reliance on improvised responses

Participants will leave with:

  • A clearer understanding of postvention readiness

  • Greater awareness of the potential impact of client suicide on clinicians and clinical practice

  • Practical strategies for preparing themselves and their teams

  • A foundation for identifying and strengthening postvention supports within their organization

SESSION 2

Postvention as Supervisory Practice

November 6th 2026 | 12pm-1:30pm

A Three-Phase Framework for Supporting Clinicians After Client Suicide

What happens after a client dies by suicide does not end with an incident report or a single debrief.

Supervisors and clinical leaders are often expected to support clinicians through the impact of client suicide without having a clear framework for what that support should look like over time.

This session introduces a Three-Phase Framework for Postvention Clinical Supervision, providing supervisors and leaders with a structured approach to supporting clinicians from the immediate aftermath of a client suicide through reflection, integration, and return to sustainable clinical practice.

Participants will explore:

  • Why postvention requires an ongoing supervisory response

  • The role of supervision in supporting clinicians after client suicide

  • The Three-Phase Framework:

    • Safety & Stabilization

    • Meaning-Making & Reflection

    • Integration & Reconnection

  • How supervisory priorities shift across the phases

  • What clinicians need from supervision in the immediate aftermath

  • When and how to move from containment toward reflection and meaning-making

  • Supporting clinicians as they reconnect with their clinical work

  • Common supervisory missteps, including moving too quickly into clinical analysis or treating postvention as a one-time intervention

  • How leaders can create structures that support postvention supervision over time

Participants will leave with:

  • A practical framework for structuring supervision after client suicide

  • Greater clarity about the changing supervisory needs of clinicians over time

  • A way to distinguish immediate containment from later reflection and integration

  • Practical considerations for strengthening postvention supervision within their setting

Optional 30-Minute Consultation

Following each presentation, participants are invited to remain for an optional 30-minute facilitated consultation and application period.

This time provides an opportunity to explore how the material applies to participants' own clinical, supervisory, or organizational contexts, including:

  • Questions about current postvention practices

  • Supervisory challenges following client suicide

  • Gaps in organizational readiness and support

  • Applying the material within different practice settings

  •

Participants are welcome to bring questions or scenarios from their own professional context for discussion.

The two sessions are designed to complement one another.
